The Oscar Project: Canada’s #1 solution for secure data destruction and device recycling
Did you know that only 20% of Canadians recycle their old electronics despite the fact that more than 1 million tonnes of e-waste are generated in Canada every year? (Source: University of Waterloo). While most Canadians agree that recycling is the responsible thing to do, their top concern is data security.
That’s why millions of phones, tablets, laptops, and hard drives sit unused in drawers and closets. People worry their personal data could end up in the wrong hands, and according to the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, a factory reset does not fully erase sensitive data. Dropping devices into an open bin at a retail store doesn’t inspire confidence.
As part of our Project, we began researching why Canadians weren’t taking action with their old devices. We asked our friends and family. Then we took it one step further and commissioned a Canada-wide research study. The reasons became clear quickly.
The Oscar Project: A secure Canadian solution
This is the challenge that inspired The Oscar Project, a Canadian initiative designed to make device recycling safe, secure, and trustworthy.
We already had the facilities, trained staff, and expertise in Canada from years of securely decommissioning devices for organizations across industries. With The Oscar Project, we extended that same professional, Canadian-based security to the public.

Who operates The Oscar Project
The Oscar Project is operated by PiiComm, a proudly Canadian company with more than 18 years of experience in mobile technology lifecycle management.
We are trusted by federal departments in the Government of Canada, national NGOs, and industries such as healthcare, logistics, and finance. Each year, we securely decommission and recycle tens of thousands of devices on behalf of our clients.
By applying these same high standards to The Oscar Project, Canadians can recycle their devices with complete peace of mind: data is securely destroyed, devices are handled responsibly, and everything stays in Canada.
We also designed the process to be convenient for even the busiest households.
How we securely decommission devices
Our methodology includes:
- Certified data erasure using industry-leading standards (e.g., DoD 5220.22-M or NIST 800-88).
- Physical destruction (shredding or degaussing) of hard drives when required.
- Full chain-of-custody tracking from collection to final recycling.
- Environmentally responsible recycling in compliance with Canadian and ESG standards.
- Value recovery options (refurbishment or resale of eligible devices).
A partnership built on trust
The Oscar Project was developed in collaboration with the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario). This partnership reinforces the trust and credibility behind the initiative, ensuring it is not only a Canadian-made solution but also one supported by a federal agency committed to innovation, security, and community impact.
